In the past, before the "Korean wave"* started (around late 1990s), I used to watch a lot of Hong Kong dramas in my home country. Then, in the 1990s, I started to watch Japanese and Korean dramas. After completing most of the current and popular ones, while searching the internet for older dramas a year ago, I accidentally came across an extremely long drama; a 178 episode drama about family and romance entitled, "You Are My Destiny".
While reading the drama summary I came across a familiar name; "Girls' Generation", a name I have heard of ages ago and unconsciously forgotten; now I am a fan after watching "tonnes" of videos on YouTube, fan-made or otherwise, relating to the group's past and present. Many of these videos features: pre- and post-debut footage of SNSD's activities and appearances in television variety shows; fan-made videos of funny moments captured during their public appearances for events or performances; and these videos are subtitled in many languages by the group's fans from different countries. Overtime, I guess having these videos subtitled attracted and contributed to building up an obsessive amount of interest and a huge fan base for the fun-loving, energetic, lively, cheerful and hard-working girls. That's the image I was impressed on having searched and watched, probably hundreds of videos on YouTube (almost 60 gigabyte of video clips; all with English subtitles), dating back all the way back to the year 2007.

*Korean Wave
The phenomenal success and popularity of Korean dramas in East and Southeast Asia region sparked interests in South Korean culture leading to increasing demand for its products in entertainment, music, electronics, etc. The term "Korean Wave" or "韓流" (which literally means "flow of Korea") or "Hallyu" (in Romanised Korean language) was used to describe the trend and craze for anything Korean before the turn of the century. To be continue - Part 2
