Girls' Genereation's concept in their formative and first few years after their debut was innocence, liveliness and cheerfulness. To maintain their concept, they appear in television variety shows, public performances and music videos with little or without make-up. These attributes attracted audiences from different age groups and may have inspired many to become their hardcore fans.

In July 2007, Girls' Generation had their first unofficial stage appearance on Mnet's School of Rock where the group performed their first single, "Into the New World" (다시 만난 세계). School of Rock is a 9 episode documentary filmed by Mnet recording the group's pre-debut activities and public performances titled Girls' Generation Goes to School.

'Girls' Generation' - Album
The group's first single 'Into the New World' was released soon after, including an instrumental of the group's debut song and included two other tracks: "Beginning" and "Perfect for You." The group's debut officially began on August 5, 2007, performing on SBS's Inkigayo, MBC's Show! Music Core and KBS's Music Bank. "Into the New World" won #1 on Mnet's M! Countdown. The group released their first self-titled full album in late autumn of 2007 with the lead single "Girls' Generation", a remaked version of a 1989 song by Lee Seung-cheol. Promotion for the single started in early November and the album included the group's first single "Into the New World", "Perfect For You" and eight other tracks by the group.

2008

In early 2008, Girls' Generation began promoting their second single from the album, "Kissing You". The album won the group their first K-chart win after achieving the top position on the KBS Music Bank February chart. In March 2008, the album was repackaged, and re-titled  "Baby Baby. Girls' Generation". The teaser for their single "Baby Baby" was released on 15 March. The single was released on digital music sites on 17 March. The group also performed "Baby, Baby" on various music shows such as MBC's Show! Music Core, SBS's Inkigayo, and Mnet's M! Countdown in March and April. The album's promotions concluded on April 13, 2008, on Inkigayo In late 2008, the group also participated in the SMTown Live '08 concert along with other SM Entertainment's artists.

Black Ocean Incident (June 2008)

In June 2008, Girls’ Generation (SNSD) became a victim of the "black ocean" while performing at one of k-pop’s biggest annual concerts “Dream concert” and experienced a 10 minute “black ocean”. Black ocean occurs when the majority of the audience, mainly fans from other fandom who intentionally lower/hide their fan-coloured light sticks (for SNSD, it’s rose pink). Only the SONE* section of the audience waved their pink coloured stick which is probably a few hundred fans against a few thousands in the whole arena.

*SONE - the official name of a SNSD/GG fan club (pronouced as "So Wan" in Korean).
